Soup Blog lets you know what’s going on behind the scenes of Alphabet Soup magazine.* On the blog you may find anecdotes, updates, news, and media releases to do with the magazine – as well as book reviews, author interviews, and news about book-related events.
Rebecca Newman (the Editor), updates the Soup Blog in between working on the magazine, making school lunches, and reading books from her teetering ‘To Be Read’ pile.
* Alphabet Soup is an Australian magazine for children aged 6 to 12 who love books and creative writing. Visit the website to view a sample copy and place an order.

I love your site. Keep it up !
WOW YOUR SITE ROCKS!!!!
Hi Rebecca,
Just found your blog today. I know, I know, I’m slow!! Wish I’d known about the art activities at the Art Gallery WA when we were in Perth. Also wish I’d known about your birthday blog tour. I think Alphabet Soup is a great resource and would gladly have promoted you more widely amongst the predominantly normal women who make up the Aussie homeschooling community. Most of them don’t even wear denim jumpers!
The Book Chook has been encouraging 6yo Jemimah to write a review. It is coming, I think!!
I’ve added you to my RSS feed! I’ll be back.
Jeanne
Hi Jeanne,
Glad to hear that you find Alphabet Soup to be a great resource, and sorry you missed the birthday blog tour while it was happening!
I’ll look out for Jemimah’s review. (And what on earth is a denim jumper?)

What a wonderful blog and mag – so glad I stumbled upon. Tania McCartney
Glad you found us, Tania!
Glad to have stumbled on your site. I’m starting a “Writers’ Workshop” as an after school activity at my sons’ Montessori school and was looking for outlets for the students writing – competitions and the like. Good to have found you.
Apart from the Mary Durack/Tim Winton writing awards, do you know of any other comps or websites that could be of interest to my students? They’re mostly yrs3-7 but could include a few older or younger. Any ideas to give them an outlet for their writing (poetry & prose) and illustrating skills would be gratefully received!
cheers,
Sherene
Hi Sherene,
Thanks for stopping by!
Alphabet Soup magazine is published quarterly and has a writing competition in every issue, and a design-a-cover competition once per year. The autumn 2010 issue will be available on 22 February, and details of the new competition will be available on the website then.
There are other writing competitions that children can enter. I will post a list up soon (and email the list to you too).
We also publish children’s writing in Alphabet Soup, along with adult-written material for children. (This isn’t a competition, but it can be rewarding for children to see their writing in print.)

Hi Rebecca
Enjoyed your guest blog appearance on Sally Murphy’s writing blog – and reading about the things you like about poetry.
Cheers
Thanks, Sheryl! Those young poets taught me a lot …
HI Rebecca,
Stumbled upon the blog! Yeah. We love the magazine. Loved the blog about poetry.
Regards
Donna
